The word Amritsar means the holy pool of nectar. 1573 Work began on digging the holy pool. 1601 Harmandir Sahib completed. 1604 Guru Granth Sahib installed. Alongside people representing 52 professions settled. In Maharaja Ranjit Singh's time Amritsar had superceded Lahore as the pre-eminent city of the Orient. Amritsar is one of the most ancient and fascinating cities of India. It is an important seat of Sikh history and culture. Being the gateway for travellers coming to India on the overland route from central Asia it soon became the centre of various commercial activities.
Amritsar has various historical and religious sites. The most famous of them all in the Golden Temple which was founded by the fourth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Ramdas and completed by his successor Guru Arjan Dev. Another revered shrine is the Durgiana Temple which is dedicated to goddess Durga. Amritsar being an important trade centre is very well connected. There is a daily Indian Airlines flight to Delhi and Srinagar. Direct rail links to Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi, and Calcutta are also there. There are frequent buses plying to Dehra Dun, Shimla, Kulu, Dalhousie and Dharamsala.

Golden Temple

The Harmandir Sahib or Golden Temple is known as Darbar Sahib. It is prestigious Sikh Gurdwara located in Amritsar, Punjab, India. The fifth Sikh Religion guru Guru Arjan Dev Ji constructed this religious gurudwara in the 16th Century. In 1604, Guru Arjun finalized the Adi Granth, the holy writ of Sikhism, and established it in the Gurdwara. During Maharaja Ranjit Singh's reign the lower half of the temple was decorated with marble while the entire upper half was inlaid with copper covered over by gold plate : hence its new name, the Golden Temple. Free kitchen and recitation of the divine word never cease here. Its four gates invite everyone from all directions.

Akal Takhat

The Akal Takht Sahib is the topmost temporal authority of the Khalsa Build by Guru Hargobind Sahib I the Harmandir Sahib complex stands as witness of the Sikh idea of sovereignty. It was established as a place from which concerns of Sikhs like political & military will be acted upon. It is a magnificent piece of architecture. After facing various attacks it still stands with great grace preserving the sovereignty of Sikhs.

Durgiana Mandir

Sri Durgiana Mandir is situated outside the Lohgarh Gate it is built after the design of the Golden Temple and attracts sages and scholars in Hindu scriptures from all over India. Many pilgrims from India and overseas come to visit this focal point of faith. Durgiana Mandir is named after Goddess Durga. People come here to pray for their health and wealth as in the past the families of soldiers use to come to pray for the protection and health of the soldiers fighting in wars. This is the main reason why people are attracted to this holy site.

Jallianwala Bagh

Jallianwala Bagh is a famous garden in Amritsar. It was established in 1951 to commemorate the massacre by British on the occasion of Punjabi New year on April 13, 1919. It was known as Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. Martyrs' Memorial built in the shape of eternal flame of liberty is situated on the outskirts of Golden Temple. Here, about 1500 to 2000 persons who were attending a peaceful meeting during the freedom movement fell under the bullets of the British General Dyer, on April 13, 1919. The British Queen Elizabeth II and her husband laid a wreath at the Memorial on 14 Oct.' 1997. The British forces interrupted a peaceful gathering on the occasion of Punjabi new year and shot down many innocent lies. The British sources showed 379 fatalities and about 1100 wounded.

Wagah Border

Wagaha Border is the only road Border situated between India & Pakistan. Wagaha is located on the international highway between Amritsar & Lahore . A ceremony known as the Beating Retreal ceremony or ‘lowering the flags ceremony’ takes place every evening. It is a daily military practice that the security forces of India & Pakistan. The ceremony starts with the parade by the soldiers from the both the sides & ends by the perfectly co-ordinate lowering of the nations flag and then the gates are closed on both the sides. This ceremony attracts tourists from India & abroad.

Baba Bakala

Situated about 45 kilometers east of Amritsar on the Batala road. Sri Guru Tegh Bahadurji, revealed himself to Makhan Shah Labana, a Sikh devotee here. It has a magnificent Gurudwara where people gather in thousands on every amavas (moonless night) and an annual fair is held on Raksha Bandhan day (night of full moon in August) when about one lakh people visit the place.

Dera Baba Jaimal Singh

Radha Soami Satsang Beas (RSSB) is a registered spiritual society. It is a non-profit and charitable society, and is an independent body which does not bear allegiance to any other Radha Soami or Sant Mat group (satsang). Radha means "Soul," Soami means "Lord," Satsang describes a group that seeks truth, and Beas refers to the town of Beās in Punjab State in North India. It is about 54 kilometres east of Amritsar is Dera Baba Jaimal Singh, the Radhaswami, self-sufficient colony near Beas. It is presided over by a living Master.
